Most people get their wisdom teeth in their late teens and even into early adulthood. Wisdom teeth are your back molars and are the last teeth to grow in after you have lost all of your baby teeth. Most people get their wisdom teeth removed as complications can arise if you don’t. However, some people do not need to get them removed because they grow in perfectly with the rest of one’s teeth. If you think your wisdom teeth are coming in, you should visit the dentist to see what your options are and how you should move forward in terms of removal. But, what happens if you don’t remove your wisdom teeth? What is they stay in?
Signs of Wisdom Teeth
Below are some of the common signs you may experience when your wisdom teeth come in.
Pain:
If you experience pain in your mouth and jaw, your wisdom teeth may be coming in. Patients most often report the sensation of pressure. This can vary in severity depending on the amount of space your mouth has for the wisdom teeth.
Inflammation:
Your gums may become inflamed, swollen, and sensitive around the area where the wisdom teeth are growing in. This may be accompanied by pain, but it’s not always the case.
Loosened Teeth:
You may experience what feels like loose teeth. If your wisdom teeth are coming in, your teeth may shift around if there is not enough space for the new teeth. This can lead to tenderness. You may struggle with biting down on certain foods.
Wisdom Teeth Complications
While removing your wisdom teeth may seem like a pain, it can become much worse if you ignore the issue. Below we listed some of the complications that can arise if you don’t get your wisdom teeth removed.
- Infection: If your wisdom teeth don’t fully come through your gums or even come through only partially, it can lead to a bacterial infection called pericoronitis.
- Cysts: If your wisdom tooth doesn’t come through at all, it can lead to a cyst. This can damage your bone and gum tissue, causing even further issues to your mouth.
- Impacted Teeth: If your wisdom teeth erupt out of your gums in any other position besides fully upright, they are considered impacted. They can be buried, partially or fully, in your gums or even in your jaw bone. The problem with impacted wisdom teeth is that they are difficult to take care of and can lead to decay, gum disease, bone damage, and throw off the alignment of your bite. They can also push all of your other teeth forward, making them crooked and uneven.
